What is AEO in plain English?
AEO, answer engine optimization, means shaping your pages so that AI tools answering a question use your page as the source. Instead of aiming only to rank tenth or first in a list of links, you aim to be the passage an AI Overview, ChatGPT or Perplexity quotes, with your site cited beside it.
It's not a separate discipline from SEO. Google's own documentation for its AI features says there are no extra requirements beyond normal SEO best practice. AEO is better understood as SEO with a sharper focus on direct answers and reputation. Our SEO and AEO glossary lists the related terms, and the complete AEO guide covers the full method.
Why does AEO matter for B2B sites?
AEO matters because more research now ends in an AI answer, and the click that remains is worth more. Ahrefs found the top result's click-through rate is 58% lower when an AI Overview shows, so being cited inside the answer is often the main way to be seen.
Citations also don't simply follow rankings. Conductor reports 57% of AI Overview citations come from outside the top 10, which means a well-structured page from a smaller site can be quoted ahead of bigger competitors.
How is AEO different from SEO and GEO?
The three terms share one foundation and differ mostly in what they measure. Our full comparison is in SEO vs AEO vs GEO.
Term | Goal | Measured by |
|---|---|---|
SEO | Rank and earn the click | Rankings, clicks, conversions |
AEO | Be the quoted, cited answer | Citations, AI referral visits |
Be named in generated answers | Brand mentions across prompts | |
Be described well by language models | Mentions and accuracy in answers |
Worked example: AEO on a B2B pricing page
For example, suppose a B2B software company's pricing page shows three plan cards and a contact button, with no text explaining who each plan is for. An AI engine asked "how much does this tool cost for a small team?" has little to quote, so it cites a review site instead.
The AEO fix: add a two-sentence answer at the top stating the starting price and what's included, a comparison table of plans in real HTML, and a visible FAQ answering the questions sales hears most. The page now contains the answer in a form an engine can lift and attribute.
What are common AEO mistakes?
The most common AEO mistakes come from treating it as a technical trick rather than better answers.
- Relying on llms.txt. Ahrefs found 97% of llms.txt files got zero requests. It's optional, not a fix.
- Expecting schema to do the work. Ahrefs' controlled 2026 schema test found no lift in AI answers.
- Burying the answer under a long introduction, where engines and readers miss it.
- Ignoring off-site reputation. Mentions on other sites strongly shape what engines cite.
